Dothistroma needle blight (DNB) is among the most serious foliar diseases affecting Pinus spp. globally. Infected needles were collected from potential host species in four locations in western Ukraine and in four locations in eastern Georgia during spring–summer 2015 to update the knowledge on pathogen distribution in these countries. Dothistroma spp. were detected using isolation, sequencing and species‐specific priming (SSPP) PCR. Two new hosts for Dothistroma spp. were recorded in western Ukraine: D. septosporum on Pinus nigra var. australica and D. pini on P. nigra var. mollet. D. septosporum was found on 15‐year‐old P. strobus in western Ukraine. New hosts for D. septosporum were recorded in Georgia on 5‐ to 10‐year‐old naturally regenerated P. sylvestris var. hamata and on 40‐ to 50‐year‐old P. ponderosa trees. D. pini was found for the first time in Georgia on 30‐ to 40‐year‐old P. nigra trees. The work confirmed the presence of both D. septosporum and D. pini in western Ukraine and Georgia, and demonstrated new hosts for both Dothistroma species. 相似文献

An optics theory-based mechanistic model for Secchi disk depth (Z SD) is advanced, tested, and applied for Cayuga Lake, NY. Robust data sets supported the initiative, including for (1) Z SD, (2) multiple light attenuation metrics, most importantly the beam attenuation (c) and particulate scattering (b p) coefficients, and (3) measures of constituents responsible for contributions to b p by phytoplankton (b o) and minerogenic particles (b m). The model features two serially connected links. The first link supports predictions of b p from those for b o and b m. The second link provides predictions of Z SD based on those for b p, utilizing an earlier optical theory radiative transfer equation. Recent advancements in mechanistically strong estimates of b m, empirical estimates of b o, and more widely available bulk measurements of c and b p have enabled a transformation from a theory-based conceptual to this implementable Z SD model for lacustrine waters. The successfully tested model was applied to quantify the contributions of phytoplankton biomass, and minerogenic particle groups, such as terrigenous clay minerals and autochthonously produced calcite, to recent b p and Z SD levels and dynamics. Aggression in groups of 0+ Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) was monitoredat weekly intervals in two tanks containing 100 fish each. Three 1 + salmonparr were added to one of these. After 5 weeks, fish weights were measuredin both tanks and the conditions reversed. At ten weeks, weights of fish inboth tanks were measured again. In both populations, levels of aggressionamong the smaller fish were significantly lower and growth ratessignificantly higher when the large fish were present. Although the largefish attacked the small ones, the rate at which they did so was an order ofmagnitude lower that the rate at which small fish attacked each other in theabsence of larger conspecifics. Hector's dolphin (Cephalorhynchus hectori) is an uncommon endemic of New Zealand which is suspected to be in decline due to entanglement mortality. However, uncertainty in available data has led to a dispute between the New Zealand Ministry of Fisheries and the New Zealand Department of Conservation over the status of this species. We use a density-dependent deterministic model to predict the future abundance and geographic distribution of Hector's dolphin under different scenarios of fisheries management. We then examine the sensitivity of this model to a number of parameters for which few or no data are available. We find that two populations of Hector's dolphins are predicted to decline in the future even when the most optimistic parameter estimates are used. The status of the third population is dependent upon the estimate of maximum annual population growth rate. Because of the dependence of final abundance estimates on the estimates of entanglement mortality rates and maximum population growth rate, research efforts should be concentrated on estimating these parameters. 相似文献

Historically, solid waste from chromite ore processing has been disposed of at a number of sites in Glasgow, Scotland. Leachate from these sites has been implicated as a source of chromium (Cr) contamination to both groundwaters and stream waters in the south east area of the city. In this study, chromium speciation has been determined in ground-, stream-, river- and pore waters, to assess the extent of contamination and the associated risk. The speciation of chromium is important, as the trivalent species of chromium (Cr(III)) is an essential form of the element, while hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) is a known carcinogen to humans via inhalation. Concentrations of total chromium have also been determined in sediments from the River Clyde, to assess the significance of local concentrations relative to those elsewhere in the catchment. High concentrations of Cr(VI) were found in groundwaters and streamwaters in the area immediately surrounding the contaminated sites, and high concentrations of chromium were also found in River Clyde sediments downstream of these sites. However, these concentrations rapidly decrease away from the chromium-contaminated south eastern side of the city. Data from porewaters suggest that some reduction of Cr(VI) occurs naturally in the sediments, indicating that the risk posed by high concentrations of Cr(VI) should be decreased over the longer term. 相似文献

In our study, we used a full factorial analysis of variance design to examine the effects of diluent [Mounib's sucrose‐based diluent+hen's egg yolk (EY) and Hanks' balanced salt solution (HBSS)+EY], freezing rate (?2.5, ?5.0 and ?7.5 °C min?1) and thawing rate (2.5, 5.0 and 7.5 °C min?1) on motility and velocity of Atlantic cod sperm cryopreserved in 2.5 mL cryogenic straws. We found that post‐thaw sperm performance was strongly influenced by the presence of higher‐order interactions of the factors we tested. For all models broken down by diluent, the 2.5 °C min?1 thawing rate had the lowest sperm motility recovery index. Mounib's sucrose‐based diluent+EY had the highest motility recovery index at all thawing rates. Mean per cent motility for fresh sperm (87.7±2.9%) was not significantly different than of sperm cryopreserved using Mounib's sucrose‐based diluent+EY, frozen at ?2.5 °C min?1 and thawed at 5.0 °C min?1 (77.1±2.9%). For Mounib's sucrose‐based diluent+EY, velocity was significantly higher with sperm thawed at 7.5 °C min?1, than sperm thawed at 2.5 °C min?1, while thawing rate had no effect for HBSS+EY. Our findings have implications for cod mariculture and aiding in conservation efforts for a dominant marine fish species. 相似文献

Risk assessment of pesticides for aquatic ecosystems is typically based on comparisons of exposure and effect concentrations at a variety of levels (tiers). At the highest tier, effects assessment can involve generating data under field conditions, typically in mesocosm experiments. However, interpreting the ecological significance of effects measured in these studies can be difficult because ecological factors can influence the outcome of perturbations in the real world.
